Policing blog: Distraction burglaries

November 12th, 2009 | Posted by Darryl

PC Darryl CunningtonFrom Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Melton Rural North, Pc Darryl Cunnington.

Over the past month we have seen a worrying increase in what the police call “distraction burglaries”. In these offences the elderly and vulnerable are targeted and a story is told in order to gain entry to the house.

The offender can work alone, or more commonly with an accomplice. The occupant will be distracted whilst rooms are searched and property stolen. Often the victim is not aware that anything has been taken until some time later.

Waltham on the Wolds: reducing traffic speed

September 10th, 2009 | Posted by Mark

Waltham speed checkBy Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Melton Rural North, Pc Mark Longden.

A survey of residents in Waltham taken for the recent Beat Surgery found that the biggest concern was traffic speed through the village – particularly along the A607 and Goadby Road. It came ahead of house burglaries, vandalism and thefts.

At the meeting, Inspector Nigel Peters said that he would take steps to address these concerns. The first stage being to monitor traffic speeds through the village.

The results of this two-day exercise showed that Goadby Road was the biggest problem, with 41% of drivers exceeding 40mph along this fairly narrow, 30mph stretch of road. This compared with 30% on the Grantham side of the A607 and 3% on the Melton side.

Melton Mowbray: Insp. Nigel Peters’ August report

September 8th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

Insp Nigel PetersHello again to you all. It’s time to tell you what is occurring within the borough and to update you on our crime figures.

Traffic Issues
Last month, at the Waltham Neighbourhood Watch meeting, I was asked if I would support the placement of speed- monitoring equipment at each end of this village on the A607 and also on the Goadby Road approach.

I have been informed that the monitoring equipment was indeed placed in the last few weeks and I am now awaiting analysis of the data. I shall share this information with you, once received.

Crime Update
Distraction Burglary is a particularly nasty offence as it usually targets the most vulnerable members of our community. Sadly, I have to report that we have seen an increase in it, in our area too.

Melton Mowbray: Insp. Nigel Peters’ report

July 13th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

Insp Nigel PetersHello to you all. It’s time to tell you what is occurring within the borough and to update you on our crime figures.

Traffic Issues
Firstly, I need to mention that we had a few concerns about our crime-mapping data last month particularly in the Waltham Ward. I have asked that we look at this again, as it would appear that I am telling you that there is more crime than there actually is! I will update you as soon as the problem is rectified.

Neigbourhood policing blog: dealing with travellers

June 17th, 2009 | Posted by Mark

PC Mark Longden By Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Melton Rural North, Pc Mark Longden.

I am sometimes asked what can be done to prevent unauthorised encampments. And when they have made camp, what measures can be taken to move them on.

It’s a very difficult question to answer as there are a great many variables in each individual case. Often the decision on the appropriate course of action depends on who owns the land being trespassed upon. It’s worth remembering that trespass is a civil offence, and not a criminal matter.

Policing blog: Inconsiderate or dangerous drivers

June 5th, 2009 | Posted by Darryl

PC Darryl CunningtonFrom Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Melton Rural North, Pc Darryl Cunnington.

On Wednesday I stopped a young lad after receiving complaints about the way he was driving. He was warned that if he continued to drive in this way, or drove any other car in this way, then the car would be seized and it would cost him to get it back. When I checked on the computer, he had no insurance. So I then seized the car immediately and had it towed away.

Provided that we can identify the driver and vehicle, we can follow up complaints of antisocial driving from members of the public. Here is a brief summary of the laws we use, and the likely consequences:

Community policing blog: Introducing Darryl

May 26th, 2009 | Posted by Darryl

PC Darryl CunningtonFirstly, let me introduce myself to those who do not know me: I am PC246 Darryl Cunnington, and along with my colleagues PC210 Mark Longden, PCSO6620 Bob Wood and PCSO6007 Ed Marsh, I’m based at Bottesford police station.

I’ve been a police officer for 25 years, having served in Melton Mowbray, the city of Leicester, and Oakham. In my time I’ve been a general duty officer, worked on the shoplifting squad and on the instant response and traffic cars. I have a particular interest in vehicle crime and vehicle identification.
