Bogus callers warning

February 26th, 2010 | Posted by Admin

Within the last 24 hours there have been three incidents in our area which have warranted police attention:

1. Two males in fire brigade uniform, and using a fire brigade van which was stolen from Notts yesterday, have been knocking door to door asking residents what valuables they would like rescuing in the event of a fire.

This is not a legitimate call and needs to be reported to the police immediately on 0116 222 2222.

2. Two males have been knocking at doors in Scalford but run away when the householder answers

3. Suspicious damage to a door has been reported from a property in Belvoir.

All suspicious activity by persons or vehicles should be reported IMMEDIATELY to Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222

General advice: dealing with unwanted phone calls

September 5th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

This advice comes from Bottesford Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Brian Kelk.

Over the last few years I have had many calls from NHW members about the problems of uninvited and unwelcome telephone calls. My usual answer has been to advise them to register with the (free) Telephone Preference Service (TPS).

However, another member has provided the following information of an alternative solution which recipients may find useful. By the way, members who are registered with the TPS may wish to heed the advice of Leicestershire Trading Standards which is to re-register every few years.

Bottesford: beware phone cold-callers

June 4th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

Bottesford Neighbourhood Watch is warning residents that salesmen, possibly from Asia, are calling 01949 numbers (Bottesford code), purportedly selling phone contracts. The worrying aspect is that details of bank cards and security numbers are being requested as an aid to a quick contract. Please warn vulnerable neighbours and friends that they should never pass such details to people and companies they do not know.

Within the last 28 days there have been nine thefts from motor vehicles in the Vale of Belvoir, covering an area including Knipton, Belvoir, Bottesford, Eaton and Harby. This averages one vehicle attacked every three days!

Because of the help of Neighbourhood Watch members, it’s known that at least some of these have involved persons in a white Astra van and an ‘electric-blue’ Citroen Belingo van. The Belingo van was also seen acting suspiciously in the drive of a house in Bottesford, possibly ‘casing the joint’.

Bottesford: Helpmates charity callers

November 19th, 2008 | Posted by Admin

Some houses in Bottesford have received a leaflet from HELPMATES LIMITED who will be collecting clothing tomorrow. It states that they are a commercial collecting company (number 5780892) who provide people in third world countries with clothes. From what we have been able to gleen from the web, and there is much on the Internet about this company; they sell the clothes to Third World countries. They are NOT a charity.

Anne Snelgrove (MP for S Swindon) warned her constituents on her web site: “If you want to donate it’s usually better to deal with someone you know, like a charity shop”.

Bottesford: distraction burglary

November 4th, 2008 | Posted by Admin

A distraction burglary took place last Wednesday in Bottesford. Thieves knocked at a resident’s front door and requested access to check the mains water pressure as they were, supposedly, working next door. A number of small items were stolen.

All residents should be extremely cautious of cold callers, particularly if they are alone in the house. The pretense that they are ‘from the Water Board’, or any other utility, is greatly favoured by these distraction rogues.

If you have a caller wishing to gain entry to your property, CHECK his/her ID carefully. If you have any doubts, say ‘NO‘, ensure your door is locked and call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222.

Click here for further information on ‘bogus callers’.
