Beware giving personal information

July 12th, 2010 | Posted by Admin

We’ve had reports that someone has been posting cards in Waltham offering a chance to win a car in return for providing personal information. Some residents have investigated the company and found that it seems highly dubious.

We understand that quite a few people have given their personal details to the company. The police have been informed and are advising residents not to take part in the promotion. Please pass on this advice to others.

Click here to read a report about a similar campaign in Wigan. In this case the local Trading Standards and Consumer Protection department said: “Our advice is always not to give out details on the door step if you are in any way uncomfortable with the request.”

Waltham: cold-caller warning

December 30th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

A number of people reported two cold-callers in Waltham this afternoon selling dish cloths, and presenting bogus identity cards. One was described as black, about 20 years old, and around 5ft 11ins tall.

One resident said: “When I didn’t answer the door quickly enough for his liking, he started shouting outside – perhaps as a way of establishing whether the property was indeed unoccupied?”

When the resident refused to look at his wares, the caller was said to have “muttered curses under his breath as he retreated up the path”. He added: “It does reinforce the case for establishing ‘no cold-calling zones’ in the village, particularly when you consider the elderly and vulnerable – who would be easy prey for characters like this.”

Local Beat Managers, PC Mark Longden and PC Darryl Cunnington stress that residents shouldn’t purchase items from cold-callers, and ask that we should let them know when cold-callers start knocking on doors. Although they may be completely innocent, thefts have occurred following such visits in the past. The number to call is 0116 222 2222.

Waltham on the Wolds: reducing traffic speed

September 10th, 2009 | Posted by Mark

Waltham speed checkBy Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Melton Rural North, Pc Mark Longden.

A survey of residents in Waltham taken for the recent Beat Surgery found that the biggest concern was traffic speed through the village – particularly along the A607 and Goadby Road. It came ahead of house burglaries, vandalism and thefts.

At the meeting, Inspector Nigel Peters said that he would take steps to address these concerns. The first stage being to monitor traffic speeds through the village.

The results of this two-day exercise showed that Goadby Road was the biggest problem, with 41% of drivers exceeding 40mph along this fairly narrow, 30mph stretch of road. This compared with 30% on the Grantham side of the A607 and 3% on the Melton side.

Waltham on the Wolds: cold-caller warning

July 7th, 2009 | Posted by Admin

Police were called to Waltham on the Wolds around midday today after a middle-aged, female traveller was reported knocking on doors in the village. She was said to have been of plump build, aged around 50 with a long coat, pink scarf, white shoes and carrying a brown leather bag.

By the time the police arrived, she had disappeared. But they did stop and question some travellers in a van. Please be aware that these cold-callers often check security behind houses and in gardens. And that if you have had a visit, you may be at risk.

Police stress that we should not purchase items from cold-callers. And to report any such incidents to them on 0166 222 2222.
