We’ve just received this advice from Eliza Channin at Leicestershire Police:

Below you will see the content of an email which has been brought to the attention of our Child Protection Units. It details a method that young people are using to try and prevent their parents or guardians from knowing what they are talking about online. We believe the original email was not written by children.

The main concern for the Police is that some parents may be unaware of this method. And as such, they may miss a dangerous situation developing and be unable to take preventative action to protect their child online.

Please pass this message onto as many parents as possible and look out for the ‘code 9′ system appearing in emails. Another code in use is POS (parent over shoulder).

More information on Chatroom safety can be found by clicking on this link.

—
Hey people!

you all know how it feels when you’re talking to some one online, and your mum is standing right behind you, reading every word that appears on the screen.

Then, of course, the person swears or talks about how much they love you, or they’re your crush or something and your mum reads it and tells you to get offline that instant and not talk to that person anymore.

Well, what can we do about that?

To solve this problem, we have now started the ‘code 9′ system.

In code 9, you simply type the number ‘9′ when your parent or sibling is watching over your shoulder as you type.

The person you’re talking to will know what you’re talking about, and start a conversation on homework or something.

When your parent or sibling leaves, type ‘99′ to let the person know that they are gone, so you can begin a normal conversation again.

Please send this to everyone you know so that code 9 can go into effect.

PLEASE: Copy and paste
—

This is a press release to all Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in the Grantham area on Tuesday, 15th June.

James Richard Taylor (27), of Cheverley Park, Grantham, was charged with four church burglaries on June 8. These included St Swithin’s Church in Church Street, Long Bennington, on April 18, St Nicholas’ Church in Fulbeck on April 22, St Nicholas’ Church in Barkston on April 23 and St John’s Baptist Church in Main street, Cold Overton, Rutland, on May 5.

Taylor also asked for 11 other church burglaries in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire to be taken into consideration. He pleaded guilty to the offences at Grantham Magistrates Court on June 9 and was remanded in custody for sentencing at Lincoln Crown Court on a date that has yet to be set. The date will be circulated ASAP.

DC Mel Naylor of Grantham CID headed up the investigation. She said: “This is a fantastic result for all of the churches involved.

“Taylor’s crimes had an extremely negative impact on small tight-knit communities. A lot of people like church wardens devote their time out of the goodness of their heart to the upkeep of our village churches and they were very hurt by what happened.

“Taylor stole cash, silver and documents from churches around Grantham and in Leicestershire. Much of what he took was irreplaceable and has now been sold on – probably lost forever. Thankfully we have managed to recover some records and these have been returned.

“We worked closely with Leicestershire Police on this investigation and we would like to thank them for their assistance.”

I’ve had two unsolicited emails this morning with the subject ‘Thank you for buying iTunes Gift Certificate!’. They appear to come from the iTunes Store at ‘online.support@itunes.com’ and contain a zipped attachment called ‘Gift_Certificate’. The message reads:

Hello!
You have received an iTunes Gift Certificate in the amount of $50.00 You can find your certificate code in attachment below. Then you need to open iTunes. Once you verify your account, $50.00 will be credited to your account, so you can start buying music, games, video right away.
iTunes Store.

My suspicions where instantly raised because I don’t know anyone who would send me a $50 iTunes certificate. And a quick glance at the reply to address – novicetdg14@boyweb.com – confirms that all is not as it should be.

A number of people are getting caught by this latest email scam. Youngsters are particularly vulnerable because the idea of a $50 iTunes voucher can appear very attractive. But anyone fooled into divulging their iTunes account details will soon find that their credit card has been used to pay for all manner of goods.

The other cause for concern is that many of us use the same passwords for a number of online accounts. So divulging a user name and password in this type of fraud could lead to it being used for other scams – such as getting access to an on-line banking account. And that could spell serious trouble.

Please pass this warning onto anyone you feel maybe at risk – particularly young people who are more likely to have an iTunes account.
